XVI Conference on Thermal Treatment of Municipal Waste

Catch us this month at the XVI Conference on Thermal Treatment of Municipal Waste in Poland!

Between February 20th to 22nd, we will be attending the exciting event hosted by “New Energy” Publishing House, taking place at the Przystań Hotel in Olsztyn, Poland.

This conference is dedicated to providing comprehensive insights into the legal and financial investment aspects of thermal treatment of municipal waste. Companies, operating both in Poland and abroad, will get the chance to share their experiences in the field and explore the potential of using modern technologies.

We look forward to being a part of this event and contributing to the conversation with our expertise. Our O&M expert will be representing BWSC at the conference, so feel free to approach him for an informal chat about our O&M services, or to engage in an insightful conversation about our Boiler and Waste plant projects.

Nukissiorfiit replacement of engine to extend lifetime and improve efficiency

BWSC has been a key player in Greenland’s energy infrastructure since its early days, as part of its legacy initially as B&W Contractor. Now, we are excited to share that in the final quarter of 2023, BWSC signed a contract with Nukissiorfiit, the public utility company in Greenland, for a lifetime extension of the combined heat and power plant in the town of Aasiaat.

The project involves the removal of an obsolete diesel-generator unit, making way for the hauling and installation of a new MAN genset, provided by Nukissiorfiit, which will result in improvement in plant performance and availability.

The comprehensive upgrades also include modifications to the foundation and balance of plant, i.e., heat exchangers, pumps, piping, ventilation, VLT´s, instrumentation, cabling, noise enclosure etc., as well as an upgrade and adaptation of the existing Siemens S7 control system. This entire process is managed seamlessly as a turn-key operation, covering engineering, equipment supply, installation, and final testing and commissioning of the plant.

The project is based upon contemporary technology and will contribute to improved plant performance and availability.

The contract, effective from mid-December 2023 and valued at approximately 16 million DKK, commenced execution last month.

Historic times in Denmark

Embracing historic times in Denmark, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II for her illustrious 52-year reign and warmly welcome the new King of Denmark, King Frederik X.

With his strong commitment to green energy and the global advancement of Danish innovative technology, we eagerly anticipate this exciting new era.”

Going down memory lane: In June 2022, our CTO, Lars Guillaume Gammelgaard, had the privilege of meeting His Majesty during the Danish Royal Visit in The Hague, Netherlands. Their Majesties led a significant Danish business delegation, focusing on green energy.

Long live His Majesty, King Frederik X of Denmark!

Successful annual outage at the Ichihara Biomass Power Plant

Looking back on a successful annual outage at the Ichihara Biomass Power Plant, there were some unique moments.

Mornings started right – a dynamic synergy unfolded as our dedicated contractors and O&M team gathered for insightful tool-box-talks, fostering a culture of collaboration and safety. What made these mornings even more memorable was the incorporation of a cherished, century-old tradition – the Japanese morning exercise, Radio Taiso, that energized teams and prepared them for the day ahead.

Not only does this show operational excellence; it also showcases Ichihara’s unwavering work ethic, robust Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) culture, and long-standing traditions.

Operating in all corners of the world, we value not just meeting the highest standards of performance, but also embracing the rich heritage and practices that make each of these places special.

Efficient boiler and overheater repair

In the early morning of week 46, we received an urgent call from one of our esteemed clients operating Waste-to-Energy plants in Zealand. Upon hearing that they were facing a forced boiler shutdown due to damage in the boiler wall and overheater, our dedicated team at BWSC swiftly responded and arrived onsite on the same day, by 15:00 hours.

The repair process was executed with precision by our expert Boiler Field Service group, that simultaneously addressed issues in the boiler wall and overheater. Thanks to their efficiency and expertise, we are pleased to announce that the boiler was successfully repaired and underwent non-destructive testing, earning our client’s satisfaction.

The entire repair operation was completed in record time, allowing the boiler to restart smoothly by 20:00 hours, on the same day. This operation is an example that attests to our dedication to our clients and our commitment to excellence in all we do.

Glansager Plant Inauguration

On November 3rd, the Glansager Bio Power-to-X plant celebrated its official inauguration with distinguished guests, including our Minister of Commerce, Morten Bødskov.

This pioneering project, financed by Andel and Nature Energy, has the purpose of upgrading the 40% CO2 contents in biogas to natural gas through a biological conversion process, using hydrogen generated from wind and solar energy.

The key components for the hydrogen plant, the electrolyzers, have been supplied by Stiesdal Hydrogen, with whom BWSC have had a close and fruitful cooperation, both companies as sub-suppliers to Andel.

BWSC are grateful and proud to be a part of this groundbreaking technology project, where we contributed with, engineering, installation, and essential equipment including a control and operation system.

The event received media coverage in Denmark, and our CEO, Jens Peter Koch, and CCO, Dimitris Likouressis, were present at the event proudly representing BWSC, along with key members of our team.

Fostering student opportunities

At BWSC, we are dedicated to nurturing young talent, so we maintain a close relationship with Maskinmesterskolen København, a school for marine engineering education.

We believe their students represent the future of engineering in Denmark, and we often welcome them as interns or full-time employees at our company. Therefore, we invest in their learning and ensure they are provided with the right support to further their education.

As part of our initiative to develop young talent, we sponsored study trips to Spain and France earlier this October, to enrich these students’ educations with opportunities that allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge onto real-world, practical scenarios.

Last week, we got to hear about their newfound insights and experiences, as we had the pleasure of welcoming two classes to our Allerød HQ office. During this visit, we shared with them the work we do at BWSC and discussed its relevance to the practical learnings they acquired on their study trips abroad.

BWSC this year has sponsored a total of 7 classes on trips not just to Spain and France, but also to other countries such as Hungary, Czech Republic and Iceland. Every half a year, we receive the recently travelled students, which is always very exciting for us, and we cannot wait to hear about next year’s trips.

Sound interesting to you? To learn more about our student opportunities, visit our student page found here.

Also, do not miss out on watching the experience of our two student interns in Kenya!
