PEAK Wind and BWSC Partner to Accelerate Power-to-X Projects with New Operations Services

PEAK Wind and BWSC (Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor) have entered a strategic partnership to offer new Power-to-X operations expertise to the market. The partnership is a significant step in bringing large-scale green hydrogen plants into operation, combining expertise from the process and renewable energy sectors to create a best-in-class industry standard for the future.

The parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer asset and operations management of large-scale green hydrogen plants globally. This collaboration unites two industry leaders with deep expertise in renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, and large-scale project management to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.

The EU aims to develop ten million tonnes of annual renewable hydrogen production capacity locally by 2030, while global demand for clean hydrogen is expected to exceed 500 million tonnes per year by 2050. This presents significant potential for the partnership, as both parties have a global presence and are already managing operating portfolios in core regions for green hydrogen development, including Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

“With this partnership, clients can expect a comprehensive offering that combines PEAK Wind’s expertise in wind generation with BWSC’s experience in processing plants and green hydrogen,” said Michael Andersen, Founder and CEO of PEAK Wind. “By providing a single point of contact for the client, we can deliver cohesive strategy, planning, asset management, technological advisory, design, engineering and optimization for developers and investors globally. As a unique partnership in the industry, we will offer operations and asset management services for large-scale hybrid plants, and through our combined offering, work to reduce the levelized cost of green hydrogen.”

“BWSC, known for its expertise in energy project execution, service and plant operation, will contribute its technical knowledge and operational excellence. ‘Partnering with PEAK Wind is an exciting opportunity for us to expand further into the emerging Power-to-X sector. Our combined capabilities will allow us to develop and operate innovative, large-scale energy projects that deliver sustainable and reliable energy solutions,’ commented Dimitris Likouressis, CCO of BWSC.”

The collaboration will focus on developing a portfolio of Power-to-X projects across Europe, Latin America, and Africa, where the demand for green hydrogen and synthetic fuels is rapidly increasing. These projects will leverage the core expertise of each partner:

BWSC and PJ Diesel Engineering collaborate to accelerate circular economy within remanufacturing of engine components

BWSC and PJ Diesel Engineering (PJDE) have signed a strategic cooperation agreement where we aim to utilize each other’s network and technical competencies to promote the remanufacturing of engine and turbocharger components.

As both companies are working in the energy and maritime businesses, we choose to undertake the role of encouraging ourselves and our stakeholders in taking concrete actions to reduce CO2 emissions and extend the lifetime of components supported by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

We take actions to constantly improve our compliance with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) including Environmental Social & Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“It has always come as natural for BWSC to recycle and refurbish components when possible and cater to the client’s requests and satisfaction. To comply with an increased demand for remanufactured component alternatives and global demand for carbon reduction, it has, for us, been common sense to take extra steps and initiatives toward transparency in promoting this approach.”

Flemming Juel Jensen, BWSC – Senior Vice President Global Service

BWSC A/S and BWSC Panama will offer and recommend PJDE’s manufacturing services as an alternative to utilizing new spare parts and major components when we need to send components for manufacturing. PJDE will do the same regarding BWSC’s manpower and engineering services, as well as for our workshop’s capabilities in Panama.

With our workshop’s capabilities for engineering, overhauls, and service for turbochargers and engine components in Panama, we service the Pacific and the Atlantic, the Panama Canal, and the Americas.

To be aligned with our strategy and business areas, we have targeted specific product segments to promote such as turbochargers, fuel equipment, engine parts, governor, and control parts.

BWSC

A circular economy mindset to benefit the entire supply chain

Our vision is simple: Make decisions the best way possible to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and make a proactive impact on the environment and our partners.

Remanufacturing is a viable option, which extends the lifetime of an engine component, preserve natural resources, with a documented carbon reduction. The increased service life benefits the environment and reduces maintenance costs without compromising application reliability.

Specific parts can be remanufactured several times, before reaching the end of their useful service life. Providing sustainable alternatives also implies costs savings up to 60%, while maintaining the same durability for a full overhaul cycle.

“Together we can renew the way of thinking and encourage remanufacturing and recycling practices. For many years, our industries have embraced the idea that only new components were viable, and this has been the general standard combined with availability. This is the mindset we are trying to change. New is not necessarily better. The “old and usual way” of doing things is not always an optimal solution for the clients, the components, nor the environment. A remanufacturing alternative is not only good business but also the future. Access to the best of both worlds – new and remanufactured when required.” says Anne-Mette Elsborg, CEO, PJ Diesel Engineering A/S

BWSC signs 12-year operation and maintenance (O&M) extension agreement

It is a pleasure to announce that BWSC has signed a long-term O&M extension agreement with the owners of Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant. Funds managed by Greencoat Capital LLP took ownership of the plant in June 2020.

The Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant is a 38.5 MW straw-fired Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant constructed by BWSC. BWSC has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of the plant since commissioning in 2014 and was asked to extend the O&M contract till year 2034.  The biomass plant meets the electricity demand of around 65,000 homes and provides low-cost renewable heat to civic and sports facilities in the town of Sleaford.

Greencoat Capital’s ambition is long-term ownership and sustainable operation of the plant, and with this extension of contract trusts BWSC to deliver on this ambition. In addition, BWSC has committed to expand its performance commitments and scope of responsibility thereby reducing the risk profile of Greencoat Capital’s investment.

We are extremely pleased with this extension of contract and the trust that Greencoat Capital shows BWSC by fully committing to us for the complete O&M of the plant”, says Karsten Valsted Larsen, SVP of O&M at BWSC  – and continues, “We are only as good as evaluated by our customers and we are proud that our continued performance on the Sleaford facility and similar biomass plants in the UK gives Greencoat Capital the confidence to extend the contract with BWSC”.

Hugh Unwin of Greencoat Capital comments “Greencoat’s investors are seeking long-term, stable cashflows and a key to achieving this is developing strong and lasting partnerships with our contractual counterparties. BWSC has common goals in terms of the safe and reliable operation of the Sleaford plant and we are pleased to have extended our O&M contract with BWSC until 2034.”
