Green Hydrogen Solutions

To meet the ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global temperatures to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, the decarbonisation of industrial sectors is urgent.

However, across fertiliser production, shipping, aviation, chemicals, iron and steel production, reducing the CO2 emissions of these sectors is proving a challenge due to the limitations of available technology today or the costly nature of available solutions.

Listen to our CEO’s take on why you should partner with BWSC for your energy projects

Today, most hydrogen production relies upon carbon-intensive fossil fuels. However, to achieve significant CO2 emission reductions, green hydrogen production will have to be scaled up to deliver upon its potential as an energy carrier and produce the feedstock necessary for decarbonisation.

Thus, green hydrogen plants are the missing link in the value chain to satisfy the demand for green feedstock and support the energy transition.

A typical green hydrogen plant (or Power-to-Hydrogen) consists of the following:

  • Renewable power technology such as solar PV panels
  • Water electrolysis plant uses electrolyser technology such as alkaline or proton exchange membrane (PEM)
  • Balance of plant equipment to support the conversion of green electricity to green hydrogen and ensure its safe purification, transport and storage

Power-to-Hydrogen plants require seamless integration across several systems, from the power supply and conversion to hydrogen production, storage and possible additional conversion steps.

Our vast experience with complex electrical, mechanical, process and control systems within power plant infrastructure means we are well-placed to support your endeavours.

As a technology integrator, BWSC handles all site installation, including the engineering and installation of critical connections, power source and utility connections, and general project management.

We also offer assistance with sales services and maintenance throughout the plant’s entire lifecycle.

We are excited to discuss your project ideas and utilise our expertise in engineering and project execution to find a personalised solution in partnership with a range of technology suppliers.

Fuel Conversions

BWSC designs and executes fuel conversions on ageing power plants.

In partnership with BWSC, we can offer unparalleled insight into the technical, economic, and legal issues that power plants face.

Existing plants are subject to dynamic market conditions, regulations and changing fuel availability. However, with a heightened focus on our impact on the planet and climate change, we seek to enhance your operations through lifetime extensions, improved efficiencies, and NOx emission reductions.

In addition, we can deliver fuel conversions to optimise the existing fuel mix, improve alternative fuel usage, plant efficiency and maintenance, and minimise your operation’s environmental impact.

Delivering fuel conversions for plants enables new fuel handling capabilities and managing blends, both solid (biomass) and liquid fuels. We have considerable experience in conversions of all types, particularly boiler and engine conversions.

We offer two boiler conversions: bio-to-bio and non-bio-to-bio.

For bio-to-bio conversions, such as wood chips to wood pellets or dust, involves:

  • Lifetime extension retrofits such as drum and heating surfaces
  • Replacement of old firing systems with efficient, low-NOx firing systems

Whereas, non-bio-to-bio conversion, such as coal-to-wood pellets:

  • Conversion from fossil-fired to biomass-fired boilers
  • Evaluation of boiler upgrade suitability
  • Upgrade of fuel supply and preparation system

We offer two solutions within engine conversions for engines to operate on dual fuel mix and gas.

  • Conversions from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to operation on cleaner fuels such as ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) or future green energies such as e-Methanol
  • Engine conversions to operate on gas

We look forward to discussing your project ideas and hope our team’s expertise in engineering and project execution can help you find the solution you desire.

Renewables Integration

Our hybrid power plant solutions ensure energy supply security, maximize renewable energy output and reduce the operational costs of your facilities.

Due to the rapid decline in the costs of technologies such as solar PV panels and wind turbines, renewables are increasingly competitive with diesel-, gas- and biomass-fueled baseload power plants.

However, to meet demand, a reliable base load source when natural elements are not favorable for energy production is necessary—for example, through conventional fuels such as diesel, gas, and e-fuels in the future.

Hybrid power plants are an essential progression towards cleaner, more efficient, and affordable low-carbon power generation solutions.

They ensure a high degree of flexibility through additional power generation sources that can cater to the variability of renewable energy with fast ramping capabilities to handle peaks and falls in energy supply and demand.

At BWSC, we seek to design and implement the right solution for your challenges and can deliver on- and off-grid hybrid solutions.

Our on-grid solutions consist of grid-connected hybrid power plants for power export. Furthermore, we also offer off-grid hybrid solutions for remote applications, where reliable and affordable power is necessary to improve energy security and save fuel costs on existing plants.

We evaluate technologies and systems using state-of-the-art modelling tools and conduct electrical stability analysis. In addition, we design and implement intelligent control systems to support the retrofitting or extension of your plant or facility.
